Tanah Lot by scooter: tickets, tides and sunset tips

By Joe Wasia, living in Bali for 15 years · Updated 5 Nov 2026, 5 min read

The short answer

Tanah Lot is about 16 km from Kerobokan and 11 km from Canggu, roughly 30 to 50 minutes by scooter. Foreign adults pay Rp75,000 and a motorbike Rp3,000 to park, and the site is open about 6am to 7pm. You can't enter the shrine on the rock, but at low tide you can usually walk to its base; arrive 60 to 90 minutes before sunset.

Key facts

  • Distance: about 16 km from Kerobokan, 11 km from Canggu; about 30 to 50 minutes by scooter.
  • Entry (official site): foreign adult Rp75,000, child Rp40,000; motorbike parking Rp3,000.
  • Open about 6am to 7pm daily; hours can change for ceremonies.

Getting there by scooter

Tanah Lot is on the coast at Beraban, in Tabanan, north-west of Canggu. From our base on Jalan Raya Kerobokan it is about 16 km, and from central Canggu about 11 km. Allow about 30 to 50 minutes by scooter, more in the late afternoon when everyone heads there for sunset.

  1. Set Google Maps to motorbike mode and search for "Tanah Lot".
  2. Ride north-west through Canggu or towards Kediri, then follow the signs for Tanah Lot.
  3. Pay the vehicle fee at the gate and park in the big lot near the entrance.
  4. Walk from the car park past the souvenir shops to the cliffs and the beach.

The road in is busy at the end of the day but not steep or difficult. If you stay for sunset, you will ride back in the dark with a lot of traffic leaving at the same time, so take it slowly.

Tickets, hours and parking

TicketPrice
Foreign adultRp75,000
Foreign childRp40,000
MotorbikeRp3,000
CarRp5,000

These are the prices on the official Tanah Lot website. The management planned higher prices from 1 April 2026 but postponed the increase in April, so check the official ticket page before you go. Most guides give the opening hours as 6am to 7pm every day; hours can change for ceremonies. Bring cash for the parking and small stalls.

Can you go into the temple?

No. The shrine on the rock is for people coming to pray, and visitors can't climb up into it. What you can do depends on the tide:

  • At high tide the rock is surrounded by water. You get the classic view from the shore and the cliffs, but you can't reach it.
  • At low tide you can usually walk across to the base of the rock when staff allow it. There is a freshwater spring under the temple, where attendants offer visitors holy water; any donation is up to you.
  • The holy snake. Near the temple there is a sacred snake kept for visitors to see. Don't touch it, or any sea snake in the rock pools.

Never cross while the water is rising or waves are breaking over the path. Check a tide table for Tanah Lot on the day if you want to walk out.

Batu Bolong and the cliff walk

A short walk along the cliffs is Pura Batu Bolong, a small shrine above a natural hole in the coastal rock. It is one of the best places to watch the sunset over Tanah Lot, so many people walk there about an hour before sunset. Stay behind the fences and away from the cliff edges: the surf below is rough. The black-sand beach is not a swimming beach.

Best time to go

  • For sunset, arrive 60 to 90 minutes before. In early November the sun sets at about 6:15pm, and in mid-December at about 6:30pm.
  • For fewer people, go early in the morning. Sunset is by far the busiest time.
  • In the rainy season (roughly November to March), afternoons are often cloudy or wet, so a clear sunset is never guaranteed. Pack the raincoat that comes with your scooter, and see our guide to riding safely in Bali.
  • On temple festival days (odalan, every 210 Balinese days, around Galungan and Kuningan) the temple is full of worshippers. It is a beautiful time to see it, but busier, and parts may be closed to visitors.

Kecak dance at Tanah Lot

A Kecak dance is performed at Tanah Lot in the late afternoon, ending around sunset. Antara reported a ticket price of Rp100,000 per person in 2024, the same for everyone; check the time and price on the day, as they can change.

How to visit respectfully

  • Cover your shoulders and knees, and wear or carry a sarong and sash in case staff ask for one.
  • Don't climb on walls, gates or shrines, and give way to people carrying offerings.
  • Ask before using a drone; it needs permission from the management.
  • Wear shoes with grip: the rocks at the base are wet and slippery.

What to bring

  • Cash for tickets, parking and drinks.
  • A raincoat and a dry bag for your phone in the rainy season.
  • Water and sun cream for the cliff walk.
  • A light jacket for the ride home after dark.

Planning your day

Tanah Lot fits well into an afternoon from Canggu, Kerobokan or Seminyak. We deliver scooters to Kerobokan for free and to Canggu and Seminyak for a small fee, so you can ride out after lunch and be back for dinner. Prices run from Rp98K to Rp200K a day; you can book a scooter on WhatsApp. For what else is on around Bali this week, see Balithisweek.

Questions people ask

How far is Tanah Lot from Canggu and Kerobokan?

About 11 km from central Canggu and about 16 km from Kerobokan. By scooter that is about 30 to 50 minutes, longer in the late afternoon before sunset.

How much is the entrance fee to Tanah Lot for foreigners?

The official Tanah Lot website lists Rp75,000 for a foreign adult and Rp40,000 for a foreign child, plus Rp3,000 to park a motorbike. A planned increase was postponed in April 2026, so check the official ticket page before you go.

Can tourists go inside Tanah Lot temple?

No. The shrine on the rock is for worshippers. At low tide you can usually walk to the base of the rock and the holy spring when staff allow it, but not climb up into the temple.

What time should I arrive for sunset at Tanah Lot?

About 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. In November and December the sun sets at roughly 6:15pm to 6:30pm, so aim to arrive by about 5pm.

Is it easy to ride a scooter to Tanah Lot?

Yes, for a rider who is comfortable in Bali traffic. The roads are flat and busy rather than steep. The hardest part is riding back in the dark with the sunset crowd, so go slowly.

Do I need a sarong at Tanah Lot?

Cover your shoulders and knees. Bring a sarong and sash in case staff ask for one at the sacred areas, such as the holy spring.

Alrighty, let's ride.
