Canggu to Uluwatu by scooter: route, time and tips
By the alrity team in Kerobokan, Bali · Updated 1 Nov 2026
Canggu to Uluwatu is about 30 to 35 km and takes around 60 to 90 minutes by scooter, depending on traffic. The usual route runs from Kerobokan down Sunset Road, past the airport and through Jimbaran onto the Bukit. You don't need the Bali Mandara toll road for this trip. To arrive for sunset, leave Canggu by 3pm.
Key facts
- Distance: about 30–35 km. Time by scooter: about 60–90 minutes, longer in the late afternoon.
- Route: Kerobokan, Sunset Road, the airport, Jimbaran, then Jalan Raya Uluwatu.
- The Bali Mandara toll road has a walled-off motorbike lane and takes cards only, but it isn't on the way from Canggu.
- Beach parking on the Bukit: Rp2,000–5,000, cash.
The route, step by step
- From Canggu, ride to Kerobokan and join Sunset Road heading south towards Kuta.
- At the end of Sunset Road, follow the signs for the airport (Bandara) onto Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai.
- Ride past the airport and continue south into Jimbaran.
- From Jimbaran, follow Jalan Raya Uluwatu up onto the Bukit peninsula.
- Turn off for your beach or villa: Bingin, Padang Padang and Uluwatu are signposted from the main road.
Google Maps works well here; switch it to motorbike mode so it suggests roads scooters can use.
How long it takes, and when to leave
| Leaving Canggu | Expect |
|---|---|
| Early morning | About 60 minutes |
| Late morning to early afternoon | About 60–75 minutes |
| 4pm to 7pm | 90 minutes or more |
Sunset is the busiest time on the Bukit: the road to Uluwatu Temple and the clifftop beach clubs fills up from late afternoon. If you want to be there for sunset, leave Canggu by 3pm.
The toll road question
You'll read online both that scooters can't use Bali's toll road and that there's a special scooter lane. Both are half right. The Bali Mandara toll road over the sea has a separate, walled-off lane for motorbikes, the only toll road in Indonesia with one. You pay at the gate with an electronic money card (such as Mandiri e-Money or BRI Brizzi), not cash; the motorbike toll was Rp5,000 in 2023. But it links the airport with Benoa, Nusa Dua and the Denpasar–Sanur side, so it only helps if you start from Sanur or ride to Nusa Dua. From Canggu, the route above is the way.
Stops worth making
- Jimbaran for seafood on the beach, if you ride back late.
- Melasti Beach, down a dramatic road cut through the cliffs: see Balithisweek's Melasti Beach guide.
- Bingin Beach, reached by steps down the cliff: the Bingin Beach guide.
- Nyang Nyang Beach, wild and quiet, with a long walk down: the Nyang Nyang guide.
- Uluwatu Temple on the cliff, with the Kecak fire dance at sunset. Hold on to your sunglasses and phone: the monkeys grab them.
Riding tips for the Bukit
- The roads down to the beaches are steep. Go slowly, use both brakes, and walk the last stretch if it looks too steep.
- Fill up in Jimbaran or on the main road before you head down to the beaches.
- Parking at the beaches costs Rp2,000 to Rp5,000, paid in cash to the attendant.
- Two people and bags on steep hills? The Yamaha NMAX or the Aprilia SR GT 200 is more relaxed than a small scooter.
- Ride back before dark if you can: many roads on the Bukit have no street lights.
